I decided to take a break today after fussing around with a large painting I'm working on. So I painted this little guy as a diversion. This again is from my imagination, but after completing it I came to realize this sort of looks like a younger version of my artist friend Bob Durden. Bob is curator at Paris Gibson Museum of Art in Great Falls, MT and we met up with each other last Saturday at the C.M. Russell - Master's in Miniature art auction. He is much more cheerful than this rendering, but equally as charming. Thanks for the inspiration Bob!

Heres that little calf I did a sketch of back in March (below). I placed him in the same sort of landscape as my dying stallion. A little balance to that gloomy scene?

I hit a wall today. Trying to do the marketing thing.

Like most artists I'm horribly unorganized, but decided several months ago that I would clean up my act and make better use of my mailing list, etc.

So far so good, till today. After suffering through another morning of paperwork tedium, I threw everything in a box (sort of...) and got my paints out.

This painting I just wanted to play with. No pressure, just squish some paint around and relax.

Whew! I'm so glad I did, I feel much better now :O)

I've been working on my brewery painting for the past few days now and thought I'd take a break and loosen up some. I love realism, but it's so exacting that you must lay down cautious, thoughtful brush strokes. So I decided to have a little fun this afternoon and throw some paint around. I really like how this one came out. Its colorful, but the rain and mud give it an edgy quality of emotional contrasts that I wish I could get in all my work.

Well, today I think I may have made a breakthrough. I have been stressing quite a bit on this whole stylized approach that my paintings have been leaning toward. Really, I'm just thinking its not the direction I want to go. Allowing myself the freedom to experiment with it, though, has really I helped create some interesting areas in my work that I'm excited about and want to hold on to. With this painting, some of that outline is still visable. For me, a happy medium. I love the composition on this one, sort of a leaning cross.

This is my husband again, and about the best likeness I've ever done of him. I am still wanting to do a cowgirl series much like this pose.
